Responsibility

Melan’s obligations to the broader research and innovation ecosystem cover equitable access to partnership opportunity, the social and economic impact of research commercialization, and environmental considerations across the sectors and technologies that we support — including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, biotechnology, climate technology, materials science, advanced robotics, critical resources, marine and ocean technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, energy systems, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.

Equitable Access to Partnership Opportunity

Research partnerships tend to concentrate among well-resourced institutions. Melan works to broaden access. We actively identify and engage researchers at emerging research institutions, minority-serving institutions, and laboratories in regions that are underrepresented in corporate R&D networks.

Our matchmaking platform evaluates research capability, not institutional prestige. Principal investigators are surfaced based on the quality and relevance of their work, the strength of their lab, and their readiness for industry collaboration — regardless of whether they come from an R1 university, a primarily undergraduate institution, or a federal lab.

How we promote equitable access:
  • Inclusive scouting: Our technology surveillance covers 1,200+ institutions globally, including those outside traditional R&D hubs
  • Transparent selection: Partnership recommendations are driven by alignment scores, not relationship favoritism
  • Capacity building: We provide guidance to first-time industry partners on how to navigate corporate engagement, IP terms, and grant compliance
  • Flexible deal structures: We design partnership frameworks that accommodate differing levels of institutional experience and infrastructure

Social & Economic Impact of Research Commercialization

The translation of academic research into commercial products creates economic value, but the distribution of that value depends on how partnerships are structured. Melan designs agreements that generate returns for all parties — including the research institutions and the public that funded foundational discovery.

We prioritize partnerships that address pressing societal challenges: climate technology, critical resources, disease diagnosis and treatment, advanced manufacturing resilience, and sovereign capabilities in AI and quantum computing. Our sector focus is deliberate — we concentrate on domains where partnership acceleration can produce outsized public benefit.

Impact commitments:
  • Publication preservation: Every partnership agreement we structure protects the researcher’s right to publish, ensuring knowledge enters the public domain
  • Licensing fairness: We advocate for licensing terms that allow research institutions to share in downstream commercial success
  • Workforce development: Partnerships we facilitate include provisions for student and postdoc involvement, training the next generation of research talent
  • Regional economic benefit: We prioritize partners and institutions that commit to local manufacturing, supply chain development, and job creation

Environmental Considerations

Melan operates across sectors with significant environmental footprints — energy, advanced manufacturing, chemicals, critical minerals, and materials science. We believe research partnerships in these sectors should advance environmental performance, not enable its delay.

Our environmental responsibility takes two forms. First, we prioritize partnerships that develop cleaner technologies: carbon capture and utilization, sustainable materials, renewable energy systems, circular economy processes, and green chemistry. Second, we consider the environmental implications of the partnerships we architect — including the energy and resource demands of the research itself.

Environmental principles:
  • Sustainability screening: We evaluate the environmental trajectory of the technologies we help bring to market
  • Circularity emphasis: Where possible, we support research that advances material circularity, waste reduction, and resource efficiency
  • Transparency: We encourage our partners to disclose the environmental impacts of their collaborative research
  • Continuous improvement: We review and update our environmental criteria as climate science and regulatory frameworks evolve

Governance & Accountability

These responsibility commitments are reviewed annually by Melan’s leadership. Our partnership agreements include clauses that reflect the principles on this page, and we track our portfolio against the commitments described above. Clients and research partners who wish to discuss any aspect of this policy are encouraged to contact us.
